“The Hunger Games” is hardly our future—it’s already here By Miles Kimball December 8, 2013 Miles Kimball is an economics professor at the University of Michigan. He blogs about economics, politics and religion. The reality of inequality is actually far worse than depicted in the movies and books. Courtesy of Lionsgate The Hunger Games paints an eerily apt picture of the world’s reality. The Capitol is the rich nations of the world: the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Israel, New Zealand, some oil kingdoms, most European nations. The Districts are the poor nations of the world—Haiti, Nepal, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Papua New Guinea, many countries in central Asia and Africa, all of which have per capita incomes less than $10 per day . 2 The Capitol, with all of its abundance of food, advanced medical care, and gadgets, is surrounded by a giant high-tech, booby-trapped WALL. The point of the Games is to burrow through the WALL to get to the mate...

Kiosks let travelers swap their leftover change for Bitcoin Globetrotters with leftover foreign currency can now exchange their cash for Bitcoin through Gibraltar-based Travelers Box. 27th November 2013 in Financial Services , Tourism & Travel . We first wrote about Bitcoin in 2011 when it was still in beta and had just reached parity with USD. Over two years later and the digital currency is dominating the news after positive comments by US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke recently, which contributed to a record surge to USD 900. Now globetrotters with leftover foreign currency can exchange their cash for Bitcoin through Gibraltar-based Travelers Box . Currently operating in Ataturk Airport in Turkey, the startup’s vending machines are designed to help those leaving the country swap their loose change for a currency that will be more useful when they arrive back home. Rather than a traditional foreign exchange, the kiosks...

December 2, 2013 As Hospital Prices Soar, a Single Stitch Tops $500 By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL SAN FRANCISCO — With blood oozing from deep lacerations, the two patients arrived at California Pacific Medical Center’s tidy emergency room. Deepika Singh, 26, had gashed her knee at a backyard barbecue. Orla Roche, a rambunctious toddler on vacation with her family, had tumbled from a couch, splitting open her forehead on a table. On a quiet Saturday in May, nurses in blue scrubs quickly ushered the two patients into treatment rooms. The wounds were cleaned, numbed and mended in under an hour. “It was great — they had good DVDs, the staff couldn’t have been nicer,” said Emer Duffy, Orla’s mother. Then the bills arrived. Ms. Singh’s three stitches cost $2,229.11. Orla’s forehead was sealed with a dab of skin glue for $1,696. “When I first saw the charge, I said, ‘What could possibly have cost that much?’ ” recalled Ms. Singh. “They billed for everything, every pill.” In a medical system noto...

Mormon bishop disguises himself as homeless man to teach congregation about compassion By Abby Stevens , Deseret News Published: Wednesday, Nov. 27 2013 5:00 a.m. MST Makeup artist Tara Starling documented her work to transform Bishop David Musselman to appear battered and homeless on Nov. 24. (Tara Starling's Facebook page) David Musselman, a bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, did not receive his usual greetings as he approached his meetinghouse last Sunday. But then again, Bishop Musselman is usually not disguised as a homeless man for church. “As a bishop I try to always be as giving as I can, and I was surprised at my own inability to have compassion,” Bishop Musselman said in an interview with the Deseret News. “I thought about some ways I could somehow convey the importance of not being critical … and sometimes the best way to do that is through experiences that go beyond just a talk in church. And so I just laid awake many nig...

My life's goal has been to capture the moment. Those who love me most will tell you that I have done that all of my life to a fault. It was obvious to me as a small child that we will never have anything but the moment. I believe that this is the reason that photography appeals to me so much. Yesterday is a memory. Tomorrow....heck the next 2 minutes aren't promised to the greatest of us. We will only ever have the power of the moment. I smile when I consider that advice in the final chapters of my life in this three dimensional form. May we allow forgivness to heal the past Allow love to ensure our futures And let beauty rule the moment Peace
